Our Place

To rip off a popular sitcom from the eighties:

Be glad there’s one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
You want to go where people know,
People are all the same;
You want to go where everybody knows your name.

Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;
Where everybody knows your name,
And they’re always glad you came;

When I travel to San Bernardino and we get up in the morning and head down to the Del Rosa Tartan for our morning coffee I am always reminded of the theme from Cheers. Of course I am starting to take on the shape of Norm these days and my right hand man has the grey hair of Cliff with just a little less of the know it all attitude.

I see essentially the same characters their and everyone is warm and welcoming and really make me feel at home. The owner and manager Vinnie and I can bullshit for hours about poker or UFC fights. I am not sure if he even gets his work done when I am around.

Do not get me wrong this place is not the prettiest place in the world but it is our place. We go early in the morning often before the place is open; calling ahead to tell Vinnie to put on the coffee and let us in. We sit around for an hour or two waiting for our group of friends to congregate and decide on the activities for the day.

Tartan

The Tartan has dinner specials and you can eat really cheap there. I have eaten in there many times and the food is pretty good. Considering the price it is damn good. The bar prices are reasonable with a wide assortment of drink specials. The place has that small town down home feel to it. The three pool tables and a couple of dart boards keep the place fairly jumping. They have both pool leagues and dart leagues. From the looks of all the trophies around the place the Tartan sponsors a pretty good pool team. I am sure some of my more candy ass friends would be scared away by the gritty nature of this place.

There is always a game on the televisions and late at night they have karaoke. The singing is god awful and that is to be expected. The crowd is very diverse and really quite mellow. The patrons buy beer by the buckets because it is cheaper that way. The bar is fully stocked but it seems to be mostly a beer joint.

If you happen to get down to the Tartan say hi to Vinnie and let him know that we love that little place.
